Letter from Marina Dalglish:

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2003 - this not only affected me but my entire family. It was one of the most difficult and challenging times of our lives. With the help of the wonderful team of doctors, nurses, oncologists and careers I was able to fight this dreadful disease. Without their skill, dedication, encouragement, professionalism, sense of humour, love and support, I could not have come through my cancer journey.

Kenny and I were so grateful and impressed for their help, concern and understanding that we vowed that when I was up and running again we would try and repay a little of what they had done for us!

We are delighted that The Marina Dalglish Appeal has reached its original target of £1.5m and that the centre for Oncology at University Hospital, Aintree, opened on 4th June 2007. The unit provides the ideal environment for patients to receive chemotherapy to treat all forms of cancer. The centre also offers supportive care including complimentary and homeopathic treatments and practices. There is also a designated drop in centre which provides specialised 'holistic' professional care, information and advice to help patients and their families through their cancer journey, in an atmosphere that is sensitive and responsive to their individual needs. It is through your continued support and generous contributions that we have been able to achieve our goal.

We have now set ourselves a new and exciting challenge to raise £5M towards a new £17M purpose built facility which will be situated next to The Walton Centre for Neurology and Neurosurgery on land at University Hospital Aintree. The centre will be staffed and operated by Clatterbridge's own specialist radiographers and doctors and will house three state of the art radiotherapy treatment machines as well as expert cancer rehabilitation and support services.

Kenny and myself have been constantly amazed at how much time, effort and money you have all been willing to donate, and we realize that nothing would be possible without your help. Thank you all very much and hopefully together we can achieve our new goal.

Marina x
